I have gone through 3 laptop cooling fans in the last few months. Kind of a backwards system: push American jobs overseas, abuse Chinese workers, undermine our own economy. Quality goes down, profits go up, and I need a new fan every 2 months. Then, when you call to get the fan replaced under the supposed “1 year warranty,” an Indian answers the phone after pushing 7 buttons and listening to my “options” over and over for 10 minutes. And of course, he can’t help me. But at least these “American” business owners have their profits and I have to keep going back to the store to buy more laptop fans, right?
Is this the new American way? How did we get here?
I have to completely agree with ^^, the car we currently own, has started to fall apart as soon as the warranty/payments had been made, it’s absurd that a five to six year old automobile is falling apart, whereas people are driving forty to fifty plus year old cars that sometimes in better shape then ours (I also understand that some are remodeled, but there ones that just get yearly tuneups, especially the Honda Civics from 1990 that are barely showing rust).
And now, most people get a 60 month car loan. Warranties are mostly 36 months, so there are two years where you are paying a car payment AND your car is falling apart without the warranty to cover the cost of repairs.
Once Hyundai/Kia gets a bigger share of the US Market there 5 year bumper to bumper and 10 year power train warranty will probably go away.
“they don’t make ‘em like they use to” term comes to mind. I think electronics are the biggest part of the scheme. I have had more electronics break then any other thing I have ever owned. It is pathetic and at the same time sickening. The big multi-billion/million dollar industries are the main culprits, Apple, Ford, GM, Nike, ect. It, truly is a shame, what makes us human, humanity’s greatest downfall, are our emotions.
Excellent Film!!!!! Thanks to this website for the opportunity to view it.
It startled me that the EXACT SAME THING happened to me and three (3) HP printers and I was able to find THE EXACT SAME FIX for it (software fix was out of Finland however). Ink cartridges actually EXPIRING no matter how much ink is left in them (even full ones). Pure EVIL. Imagine what would happen if they did that to the gas in your car?! There’d be a revolution the next day. Eventually every one of these printers failed electronically and mechanically so that I could no longer fix and use. I’m HP Certified yet nothing I did worked. The answer to that was going to a Brother MFC + CISS. But this film convicted me so much I feel guilty just throwing the now defunct HP’s away.
People do not want a 10 year warranty on a car. At least not as much as they want the car to last at least 10 years!
It is well known that this is a way to make a large profit either by planned obsolescence or leaving things out so you have to upgrade. I was just wondering why the video has been removed by user, did it hit a nerve.
The bastards (elite) cry there are too many consumers (people useless eaters) on this planet and are destroying the planet, yet a lightbulb can be made to last forever and use only the resources it takes to make one for an entire lifetime of an individual, rather than hundreds!I do believe the ones that are useless consumers are the elite that promote waste in the name of profits!
The real problem is the distribution of money in our society.
A small group of people (<0,5% of world population) literally own everybody else. They are what we call 'rich bastards', and they have the power to manipulate our consumerism by regulating price, durability and availability of almost everything from clothes to electronic devices.
Some of them were not always rich, and as such society has forced them to do certain things so they can secure their own survival.
What we have to change is our entire economic system. We have to devaluate the concept of profit, and we have to establish a system that can value the common good (from an ecological perspective) above the interest of a few wealthy people.
It is not gonna be easy, AND in my opinion it's gonna take at least 50 years, probably even more. But we can make a start.
In creating a world whereby all products fail multiple times during the lifetime of the user so that the user loses that money multiple times in the course of their life not only does it amplify the pressures causing poverty for individuals without high levels of disposable income but, in practice it is being applied to building materials, car parts, construction techniques, software, kitchen utensils, pretty much everything sold today so that the inheritance left to the children of the middle class and poor no longer includes said items and therefore these companies are compounding poverty for the lower classes who buy these goods because they are cheap enough to afford but in reality end up paying for premium-level value products after multiple purchases and still leave nothing for their children.
It is the essence of wealth that one generation leaves behind all these things for the next allowing each successive generation to become wealthier as they do not need to spend their money and can invest instead. It is wrong to dupe the poor this way. If you are smart enough to understand this then you have a moral obligation not to do it. It is an issue of morality and quite possibly criminality.
If the greedy do not stop these practices the ultimate result will be poor people murdering rich people.
I think, on the contrary of the preceding, technological advancement has rendered lifetime of commodities much longer. In trade, cheating and conspiring is possible but only for a short time. The wheel goes on spinning and manufacturers who stand by the motion of history will always prevail in the end. Survival for the fittest!

I realized this by 1965. The shorter the product lifespan, the more often it must be replaced or repaired. Therefore, the higher their revenues.

Maybe it did hit a nerve. We added a new link and a backup for good measure.
