The Diamond Empire tells the story of a powerful cartel set up to keep diamonds rare and costly after they were found in large numbers in southern Africa; a cartel that one family, the Oppenheimers, now have under their control. It shows how the diamond industry supplied vital industrial diamonds to both sides during the Second World War, while at the same time launching the advertising campaign that made a diamond ring a prerequisite for every bride. It shows how diamonds continue to be used to fund wars throughout Africa and to be cut for mere pennies by children in India for the US market.

Diamonds are valuable for only one very weak reason. Vanity! It’s the rich wanting to flaunt the idea that only they are worthy of such baubles and that only the lower slave class are worthy of breaking their backs mining the damn things for them! Diamonds are a very common thing. They have more value embedded on a drill bit or saw blade than they do on some snobs finger, ears or around their worthless neck!
A most important issue omitted from this film is the Diamond Police in Namibia and South Africa ,funded by De Beers and used as a strong arm to stifle competition in the independent mining of diamonds.
If you have to prove your love by the size of the rock or the amount of dollars that you spend on said fiance, your married life is going to be short and very sour .
