Documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick launches an incendiary, full-frontal assault on the Motion Picture Association of America’s Classification and Ratings Administration (a.k.a. the MPAA’s CARA).

This is the entity that assigns ratings to movies — the familiar G, PG, PG-13, R, and NC-17 designations.

The film rating system in this country is governed by a secret panel created by the major film studios more than 35 years ago. Since its inception the MPAA ratings board has functioned as a sort of ‘black box’ where movies go in one end and a rating comes out the other, with absolutely no transparency or public accountability of the process.

This secret, unregulated organization wields considerable power over the film industry and operates, the filmmaker asserts, on a highly subjective and prejudicial basis.

SOFEX is where the world’s leading generals come to buy everything from handguns to laser-guided missile systems. It stands for “Special Operations Forces Exhibition Conference” and it’s essentially a trade-show where just about anyone with enough money can buy the most powerful weapons in the world.
