The Spanish American War was not the first war of imperialism fought by the US as some may think. Half a century earlier the US – Mexican War (1846 – 1848) which began over a questionable border dispute that gave the US the excuse to attack and invade Mexico allowed the US to take almost half of Mexico’s territory under the guise of Manifest Destiny. The US probably could have claimed all of Mexico, had many in congress unwilling to take all of those brown people into the US.
